Netflix published the numbers in a report, What We Watched, capturing viewing from Jan to June of 2023. It is the 1st edition of a planned semi-annual look at viewership.

In an unprecedented move, Netflix Inc. has shattered the veil of secrecy surrounding its viewership numbers, unveiling a comprehensive global midyear viewer data report for every title on its streaming service. This monumental disclosure, a first-of-its-kind by Netflix, arrived amidst a backdrop of escalating tensions between Hollywood labor unions and major studios, setting a precedent for transparency that may reshape the landscape of content creation and compensation in the streaming industry.

The data, released on Tuesday, revealed a tantalizing insight into the viewing habits of millions, catapulting “The Night Agent,” a gripping political thriller, to the zenith of global viewership. Astonishingly, the series amassed a staggering 812.1 million hours of viewing, marking its dominance over the first half of 2023. Following closely behind were Season 2 of the poignant family drama “Ginny & Georgia” and the debut sensation “The Glory,” a riveting South Korean series that swiftly captured the audience’s imagination.

Netflix, long guarded about its viewership metrics, has now taken a pioneering stride with the semiannual “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report.” This divulgence, as announced by Netflix co-Chief Executive Officer Ted Sarandos, comes after persistent demands from audiences, suppliers, and industry competitors for greater transparency.

“The lack of transparency created mistrust over time,” Sarandos remarked during a call with journalists, acknowledging the growing clamor for more detailed viewership data over the company’s 16-year streaming history.

This seismic shift in policy is a marked departure from Netflix’s historical stance of guarding its viewership figures, a stance that had shielded it from the pressures of conforming to traditional Nielsen audience ratings that often dictate the fate of shows on conventional television platforms.

However, the tide has turned. Hollywood’s creative community, once appreciative of being liberated from the constraints of ratings, has increasingly scrutinized Netflix for allegedly concealing audience data to evade fair compensation for its most successful programs. The recent victory of writers and actors in securing more substantial pay for their streaming work was instrumental in prompting this transformative shift toward disclosure.

Netflix’s comprehensive reporting spans over 18,000 titles, encompassing a mosaic of films and shows that have collectively captivated viewers for an astonishing cumulative total of nearly 100 billion hours. This meticulous breakdown, including figures for titles garnering between 50,000 to 100,000 hours, covers a staggering 99% of all viewership on the streaming platform, providing an unprecedented glimpse into the viewing habits of a global audience.

The unveiling of this data has spotlighted the indisputable dominance of Netflix originals, with nine out of the top 10 titles, and notably, the six most-watched programs, belonging to the streaming giant’s own productions. Even amidst this monopoly, the third season of “La Reina del Sur,” a drama series from Telemundo, emerged as the sole licensed content to breach the top 10, amassing a commendable nearly 430 million hours of viewing.

Among the top-viewed movies, Netflix’s original action film “The Mother,” featuring the charismatic Jennifer Lopez, reigned supreme with approximately 250 million hours watched. Notably, Netflix’s diverse array of content, including “Luther: The Fallen Sun,” “Extraction 2,” and “You People,” all Netflix originals, further solidified the streaming service’s stronghold in captivating global audiences across various genres.

Netflix, in a bid to allay concerns about overemphasizing viewership numbers, emphasized that success on its platform transcends mere hours viewed. The streaming giant asserted that the essence lies in a title’s ability to enthrall its audience, emphasizing the quality and resonance of a show or movie rather than solely fixating on the scale of viewership.

This momentous shift toward transparency not only provides a comprehensive look into viewership habits but also serves as a pivotal step toward redefining success metrics in the streaming era. As Netflix pioneers this unprecedented era of disclosure, the implications resonate far beyond the confines of viewership numbers, setting the stage for an industry-wide recalibration of values and compensation in the digital realm.
